Is this thing on?

Wow, guess it’s been a while. Kind of lost track of the last time I posted here until mom reminded me – I installed the WordPress app on my Thunderbolt (woot, 4G) and saw that the last post was Nov. 23, 2010. Shoot, over a year. I’m such a slacker.

Amazingly I still get a fair number page views for some reason. The most popular post for the last year has been my rant about Microsoft Visio crashing because of a bluetooth add-in. It actually used to rank above the official Microsoft KB article on the issue for several months in a row and still bounces to the top spot once in a while. The second most popular post now (used to be #1) is my Volvo Sunroof Repair post that details how to replace the selector gate in a sunroof. This one is probably popular due to the expensive nature of sunroof repairs and lack of warranty coverage. Most dealers won’t even give an estimate without $200 to investigate.

So what’s coming next year? I hope to do more technical writing and discussions, especially around Cisco Unified Communications. I might even start another blog for it, but there are already tons of Cisco blogs out there. Also, one of the tips I got from Wordcamp attendees once was to keep a variety of topics in your blog to attract a wider range of viewers. We’ll see. I still need to finish some certifications, especially since I’m a Senior UC Engineer now, but I still haven’t finished my CCNP (there’s the slacker coming out).

Speaking of work, things are still insane – always too many hours and not enough people to work them. I almost miss the days where I worked 18 hours a day, but then I remember what it did to my sanity and health. No thanks, I’d like to keep it below 60 hours a week now. Hopefully the recent acquisition that management announced will help with this. I love my customers and the work I do, but I can only do so much and I feel guilty when I can’t give projects as much attention as they need. Maybe I’ll get a chance to focus on more emerging technologies and actually build something new.

So 2011 is almost over and 2012 is coming up fast. 2012 should definitely be a fun ride, especially with all of the doomsday predictions and the Presidential elections coming up. Maybe the two are related? I really hate getting political, but looking at the GOP candidates and the doomsday predictions, one has to wonder if it is really a coincidence. Time to finish enjoying my well-deserved vacation, be back next year!
