Visio 2007 and 2010 Crashing

A few weeks ago I decided to reinstall my laptop and upgrade to Windows 7. After getting everything installed (which took MUCH less time than XP), all was well. Windows 7 runs much better on my T60 than Windows XP did, and I could actually put it to sleep for several days without losing my wireless or getting horrible performance.

The ONLY issue I had was with Visio 2007 crashing constantly. I tried different compatibility mode settings, including run as administrator. I upgraded to Visio 2010 at the suggestion of our IT department, but that only seemed to make things worse. At first it only seemed to affect files that were created in previous versions of Visio, so I started recreating all my call flow diagrams but even those started crashing Visio when I tried to copy/paste objects. A repair or full reinstall fixed it temporarily.

I started looking at the crash logs and every one of them was crashing in a different DLL or StackHash. FINALLY I got a random warning as Visio was shutting down after a crash: the send to bluetooth add-in may be incompatible, would you like to disable it? YES! I removed the add-in and Visio is perfectly stable now. That explains why Visio worked fine in my VM with any file I could throw at it: no lame ThinkPad bluetooth to mess it up.

  11. scott Says:

how do you disable this blue tooth add in? Is this something in Visio or do you mean the setting on your laptop? Crashing constantly… like every 2 minutes or less.

  12. Paul Says:

Yup, did the trick on Dell Latitude laptops with bluetooth enable hard button. with bluetooth disable visio crashes, when you enable bluetooth then it was okay. it turns out the bluetooth api is called but cannot respond with the hardware being disabled.

  13. Sam Vella Says:

Took me a bit of digging but:
    To disable the bluetooth addin
Login as administrator and open visio
    click tools -> trust center
click add-ins on the menu bar on the left
    – you should see the bluetooth add-in near the top
In the manage drop down select “COM Add-ins” and click GO
You can now deselect or remove the bluetooth add-in
    Click OK

  14. Same Says:

    Thx! It worked.

  19. Andrew Says:

I was *STUMPED* until I found this. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

  28. Lisa Says:

disabling the bluebooth add-in fixed the visio crashes. Thanks Sam for posting the steps. Can anyone tell me why having this add-in enabled causes the issue, expecially since it is enabled by default if the computer has bluetooth turned on.

  29. [...] Have a problem of office applications or visio 2007 / 2010 crashing on your windows 7? Knightfoo suggest you disable the SendTo Bluetooth plugin, which seems to be a working solution for many. Check it out here, and try it yourself: http://knightfoo.wordpress.com/2010/06/14/visio-2007-and-2010-crashing/ [...]

  30. dc0de Says:

Thanks for the great information… I would have never looked for a bluetooth add-in causing my problems. Sending this to my entire team.

  31. Happy Visio Says:

Wonderful, new Dell E6410 with company pre-loaded Visio 2007 on a Win 7 OS. Right out of the box Visio crashes with no rhyme or reason. I have now been crash free for 4 hours. Thank you

  32. Martin Says:

What a hassle. Thank heavens for this forum because the Bluetooth add-in wasn’t the first thing I would have thought to look at, not even the hundredth.

  33. Martin Says:

Superb ! You save lot of my time ! Many Thanks !

  34. Mac Says:

Thanks for the tip! Crash, crash, crash is gone gone gone!

  35. Chris Says:

Does a 36th reply to say “Thanks, this tip was great, saved me many headaches!” after the first 35 all said basically the same thing, really mean anything anymore? Probably not. Nonetheless, if you’re keeping a tally, chalk one up in the “very helpful” column.

  36. Snafder Says:

Worked a treat – thanks heaps!

Did not receive the error message with the info about the add-in, had to go into settings and disable there.

FYI, the steps I took to disable (a little confusing) was this:
    1) Open Visio 2010 32bit
    2) File > Options
    3) Add-Ins (just above ‘trust center’
    4) Selected ‘COM Add-ins’ from the ‘Go’ drop down at the bottom of the dialog box and clicked ‘Go’.
    5) Un-ticked ‘Send to Bluetooth’
    6) Clicked ‘OK’
    7) Gave the b@5t@rd a real workout – no more crashing.

Thank you so much Knightfoo for taking the time to post this super piece of info.
I was about ready to pull my hair out – I spend a lot of time using Visio and it was just killing me (had my fingers on CTRL+S permanently)!

  37. Snafder Says:

PS. FYI : If you had “monetized” your blog…I would’ve clicked the %$#@@ out of your ads.

  38. IITiaII Says:

Hi, Thank you very much for the hint.

I actually couldn’t disable the plugin due to lack of admin privileges for my user, but I could manually delete the btsento_office.dll file itself.

This fixed the problem for me!

    Many Thanks

  40. Mr. W Says:

Thank you so much for this information!
My Visio 2010 didn’t crash, just closed abruptly, no info, no error, nothing. After disabling the stupid “Send to Bluetooth” Add-in, all works perfectly!

    THANK YOU! :)

  41. Brian Says:

YES!!! YES YES! Thank you! I really felt like I was taking crazy pills or something… not my Visio WORKS!

  42. Rodrigo Says:

    Thanks dude…you saved my day!

  43. Maxim Says:

    Thanks!! It was great help!

  44. CodeNinja Says:

Since the plugin is installed for all users – you must run as admin to disable it or remove it under windows 7. This issue made me reinstall visio, but I realized it was not visio causing the issue, but a corrupt bluetooth add-in (Broadcom Corp – Send to Bluetooth) that crashes it. I wish visio would prompt you that the add-in failed – similar to how outlook does and ask if you want to disable it. Talk about frustrations! =0

  45. justin Says:

Found this via Google search, seems to be working for me too, thanks a million!

This has been annoying both me and my IT department for several weeks now.

  49. Paul Says:

Thank you so much! I disabled that add-in and then it crashed one more time (maybe because it needs to be closed after disabling the add-in). After that its no longer crashing!! You saved me so much frustration and having to save after every little change!

  50. Matt Says:

You are a LEGEND! Had a really crappy first week at a new job with my new laptop. Nothing works, none of my old stuff available. Thought I’d go and get Visio from the IT department so I could at least have my old trusty rusty back. Nope – that kept crashing every five minutes.

There I was seriously considering going and getting my own machine out it was that bad. And then this came to my rescue.

Who needs flipping bluetooth in VIsio?!! Back to work…

  51. Emilio M Says:

My Visio 2010 crashed every time I saved. Your sollution saved me hours of work.

    Thank you

Hey good on ya, just before getting crazy… also worked for me!
    Thx a lot!!!

  63. Mike Dedmon Says:

Thanks for the tip! Worked great for me.

Friendly reminder that to run Visio as an administrator, you have to go the executable located in the program files directory, right click on it, and select “Run as Administrator”. Then the program will allow you to remove the add-in as mentioned in the previous instructions.

  64. Jacob Says:

Thank you! Solved the problem wonderfully. :-)

  65. Andreas Says:

    Brilliant! Thank you!

It sucks that still, on Vision 2010 for Windows 7 64 bit this problem STILL occurs. Is it a problem with Dell Bluetooth drivers since Microsoft aren’t fixing it?

  66. Sandeep Says:

    Gracias. You saved me.

  84. [...] number page views for some reason. The most popular post for the last year has been my rant about Microsoft Visio crashing because of a bluetooth add-in. It actually used to rank above the official Microsoft KB article on the issue for several months [...]

  85. Russ Says:

OMG. I was getting ready to remove Visio and try a re-install until I tried this. It has eliminated the problem and saved me countless hours of re-entering information that had not saved prior to the crash. I was trying to save about every 2-3 program activities and getting extremely frustrated. Shame on Microsoft for not fixing this bug.

    Thank you.

  86. Akaz Says:

Visio 2003 running Windows Vista crashed on my new HP work laptop in very much the same way as you described it. I couldn’t find the add-in (I guess it doesn’t exist in this version), but I could remove the bluetooth from my Startup-folder in “Start/All Programs”. That did the trick. Now it works fine – even when editing Visio-objects in Word!

    Thanks!

  87. RW Says:

dude…you are a legend. thanks for posting the fix.

  88. Ram Says:

great info. it fixes the issue instantly.

  89. Chris Says:

    Thank you.
